Getting Started With Your New Codero Server

Getting Started With Your New Codero Server
Congratulations, your new dedicated server with Codero has been completed and ready for your use. This document
contains all of the information you will need to help you with the initial setup of your new server, as well as some tips and
information to help make your Codero experience the best possible. Please retain this document so that you can refer to
it in the future and, as always, if you have any questions or would like any assistance, simply call, chat, or open a ticket
and a friendly Codero representative will take care of you.
Important Information and Best Practices
Account Passphrase
The first time you open your control panel at https://serverportal.com you will be asked to configure an account
passphrase. This passphrase is our primary method of authentication and customer support cannot make any changes or
disclose any information on the account unless you are able to provide it. Please make sure to set your passphrase to
something that only would know so that nobody else could gain access to your account, and please make sure it is
something you will easily remember.
Dedicated Server Root/Admin Password
The root/admin password we have given you is your initial password. We strongly suggest that you change the password
as soon as you log into the server. It is also best to change the root password at least several times a year.
Codero recommends the following password guidelines:
 Use at least 8 characters.
 Use a combination of upper-case letters, lower-case letters, and numbers.
 Do not use words or names, especially your name or the name of your business.
 Do not use a password that shares the same characters as the previous password. For example, changing
“codero1” to “codero2” is not a safe practice.
Keeping Your Server Password up-to-date in ServerPortal
Always remember that changing your password on your server does not update our records. If you change your server
password, please be sure to change the password for the server under the Services tab in https://serverportal.com as
well. If we do not have the password on file and you need assistance from the support team, this will result in a delay in
resolution. Updating the password in ServerPortal is also much safer than submitting the password via ticket or chat.
IP Addresses
Your server comes with 4 IP addresses, but only 1 IP address is allocated during provisioning. If you need more IP
addresses, please follow the URL below for guidance on how to request them:

Rebooting Your Server
In order to make the reboot process easy and convenient, Codero has implemented an automated reboot system that
allows you to easily reboot your server through the services tab of ServerPortal. This tool is capable of rebooting servers
even if you are unable to access them, and will notify the datacenter if there is any issue with the server that requires
manual intervention. A successful reboot takes only a few minutes, but can take as long as 20-30 minutes if manual
intervention is required. If your server is rebooted too often, a Codero technician will proactively check your server for
any issues that may be causing the server to lock up and will notify you via a ticket. Because the reboot tool flags all
reboots as possible issues with the server, please make sure to only use it in cases where you cannot access your server
via SSH, RDP, and your control panel software, if applicable. If you need to issue a planned reboot, it is always better to
do so from within the server OS, since this is much faster.
