How can I enable my Windows server to host websites if I do not have Plesk?

Note: This article is relevant only for Windows 2003.

Getting Started

  1. Log into your server using remote desktop from your workstation

    1. Start > Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection

    2. In the Computer box type the IP address of your server. Enter the user name and password provided to you in your dedicated server welcome email message. Click on Connect and you will be logged into your dedicated server.

  2. Install Internet Information Server (IIS)

    1. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs

    2. Select the Add/Remove Windows Components icon on the left

    3. Place a check mark by Application Server

    4. Click Next and wait for the installation to complete.

  3. Configure the Windows firewall to allow inbound Web traffic

    1. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Windows Firewall

    2. Select the Exceptions tab and click on the Add Port... button. Add the following information:



    3. Name: HTTP

      Port number: 80

      Leave TCP selected


    4. Click on OK to save the port setting

    5. Click on OK to activate your new rule

  4. Add content to your Web sites

    1. Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer

    2. Go to C:\Inetpub\wwwroot and add your Web page content to this directory

  5. Visit your new site!

    1. Open your Web browser and enter your server's IP address (e.g. 1.2.3.4) into the address bar to see the new content.

  6. Use Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager to customize site to view and change your Web server and site configuration.

    Every site is different and you will likely wish to customize the Web server to meet your unique needs. Use Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager to accomplish this.

    1. Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager
