What’s Hot, What’s Not in Technology: Gartner’s 2009 Hype Cycle.
It’s not likely we’ll see mobile robots, quantum computing or mesh networks anytime soon. Even innovations like 3-D flat-panel displays and video search are a few years away. Those are just a few of Gartner’s latest findings on technology and Internet hype (as in excessive publicity, hoopla). Gartner’s Hype Cycle Special Report for 2009 evaluates the maturity of 1,650 technologies and trends in 79 technology, topic and industry areas.

Interesting graph. Shows adoption of concepts such as Internet TV (i.e. Hulu) on the rise, while cloud computing and e-book readers (Amazon’s Kindle) have reached the “Peak of Inflated Expectations” during 2009. More popular than ever are social software suites and technologies for microblogging (Twitter) and yet past their hype peak, therefore becoming more mainstream.
