I wanted to take a moment to touch on the Protect-IP Act (PIPA) and the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) legislation currently being considered in the U.S. Congress. SOPA and PIPA would require web hosting companies, like Codero, to police websites to stop the communication of potentially copyright-infringing information over the internet. We would like to make sure you are fully aware of the potential impact of this legislation and what Codero’s stance is on this issue.

Codero strongly opposes both the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect-IP Act (PIPA) currently under consideration. We recognize the need to protect intellectual property online; however, reasonable and well-functioning laws protecting these rights (such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act) are already in place. It is our opinion, therefore, that SOPA and PIPA are unnecessary and would unreasonably infringe on the rights of United States citizens to freely publish and access information over the internet.

We encourage you to do your own research and form your own opinions about SOPA and PIPA. Here are some recent articles concerning the matter:

CNET News – How SOPA Would Affect You FAQ

The Washington Post – SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) Debate: Why are Google and Facebook against it?

Mashable – SOPA Infographic

Fox News – Will Amazon and Facebook Black Out The Net?

Electronic Freedom Foundation – Updates

If you decide, as we have, that SOPA and PIPA are not in the best interest of the American people, please contact your United States congressman to share your concerns about SOPA and your United States senators to share your concerns about PIPA. You may also make your opinion known by signing the anti-SOPA petition at www.whitehouse.gov.

The 3.0 will be released close to the 20th anniversary of Linux in August this year. He had said earlier there was no major change in the release, but now it appears there is. In addition to being faster than 2.6.39, the Linux 3.0 kernel will not have a number of features. These include the Reiser4 file-system, the VIA KMS/DRM driver, an accelerated Poulsbo/PowerVR DRM driver, multi-GPU rendering and numerous other items.

Do you welcome a faster release? What are your thoughts?

Did you hear the news yet? Google has discontinued its specialized Linux and BSD search pages. A Google spokesperson said the services were set up years ago to offer search across a limited index of the web which used to be the best way to find this information. But today, search quality has advanced a lot and now Google says your best bet is to find specialized info using the regular Google search box.

Other special searches removed include Google Microsoft, Google Mac and Google Uncle Sam. Recent online discussions are focusing mainly on the loss of Uncle Sam Google Search which specialized in searching U.S. federal, state and local information. Google Community Manager addresses the change in a forum thread here.

Will this change affect you? Let us know.

Linus Torvalds has said goodbye to the Linux 2.6 kernel series. He has renamed Linux 2.6.40 kernel. It is now Linux 3.0 kernel with a second dot and another zero (3.0.0). There had already been 39 major releases of the 2.6 kernel series.

The kernel name is not the only change. When this release is officially launched later in the summer, reports say this kernel release will include cleancache support, a Microsoft Kinect Linux driver, and various open-source graphics driver improvements.

Linus said names and renumbering were talked about at last year’s Kernel Summit, but he felt “what’s the point of being in charge if you can’t pick the bike shed color without holding a referendum on it? So I am just going all alpha-male, and just renumbering it. You’ll like it.”

What do you think, do you like it?

Just how green is Cloud? We compiled the latest statistics to find proof that Cloud is indeed an energy-saving hosting option. With the debut of Cloud Hosting from Codero, we wanted to let you know all the advantages our new on-demand offering holds. Codero Cloud is offered by the hour or by the month. It is elastic so you can use as much or little as you want at any given time on demand and respond quickly to rapid business fluctuations.

Much has been written and discussed about how Cloud computing will take over IT infrastructure in the next few years. But did you realize how eco-friendly Cloud really is?

See how Cloud stacks up as far as sustainability benefits. Check out the Cloud Infographic below.

For those making the same change on multiple servers at the same time, this could be the tool for you. Many Linux system administrators work on a bank of machines, a farm of web servers, which they have to maintain. You might be used to logging into each one with SSH and doing it serially. But a handy tool called ClusterSSH is something you may want to tap into for help to streamline your job.

It was designed for cluster administration where the same configuration or commands must be run on each node within the cluster. It’s just one of many tools out there available for your IT toolbox.

ClusterSSH is a Tk/Perl wrapper around standard Linux tools just like XTerma and SSH so it will perform on most any POSIX-compliant operating system where libraries are available. Instructions on how to install and configure it can be found here.

ClusterSSH may not be considered a complete replacement for having a configuration management system when you’re responsible for maintaining a lot of machines. But when speed is of the essence, or if you are performing prototypes, it sounds like it

It’s official…Google just announced Kansas City, Kansas will get the first high-speed broadband network in the country. Just a few short miles away from Codero’s headquarters in Lenexa, Kansas, the city beat out more than 1,100 cities across the U.S. to become a test site for the fiber network.

Kansas City, Kansas and area community leaders worked hard to secure the network which will allow internet connections of 1 gigabit per second to up to 500,000 people. Google Fiber transmits light over a fiber-optic cable to send and receive information. To put it into perspective, Google Fiber can make internet access more than 100 times faster than the broadband connection now available in U.S. homes. And 2000 times faster than dial-up!

All parts of the Kansas City, Kansas community will receive the service with Google starting first in the neighborhoods where people desire the service. Installation will take place in 2012.

Why Kansas City, Kansas? The search engine giant’s blog says,

“In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We’ve found this in Kansas City. We’ll be working closely with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop the gigabit applications of the future.”

We know the response from cities to build the ultra high-speed broadband network in their area was overwhelming and we couldn’t be more excited to have the experimental project taking place right here in Kansas. There’s no place like home.

Watch the Google announcement and see Kansas leaders in action:

We are excited to announce the Cloud beta launch! Now’s the time to start using it when it is at prices that are even further below market price for those who sign up during the initial beta period. Set-up for both plans is at no charge and no contracts are required.

The engineers here at Codero have spent months meticulously planning the new offering so it meets your need for scalabilitiy and flexibility. Codero’s beta offers the ability to change the resources allocated to an existing Cloud, whether you want to increase or decrease the processing power, RAM or hard drive space all through our online Cloud Portal.

Once you learn more about our beta, you’ll see it is the way Cloud should be…affordable. There are two flexible plans for our new on-demand service:

1.) A pay monthly plan
2.) And an hourly plan

The hourly plan allows for paying only for the storage space and outgoing bandwidth that you actually use.

We have a product roadmap to continue to add features, but we’re keeping it flexible based on user feedback so let us know what you think about Cloud beta. You can comment below and tell us what features you would like to see in the Cloud.

Online shopping continues to become more and more convenient so it’s not surprising more customers are turning to the web for purchases. They think they can often find better deals online than in brick-and-mortar stores and prefer shopping on their own time, not when the store happens to be open.

As people start accessing the web more with devices like smart phones and tablets, the increased Internet connectivity is drawing shoppers as well. A February, 2011 study by Forrester Research shows online retail sales grew 12.6% in 2010 to reach $176 billion. It will grow to approximately $278 billion in 2015.

Shoppers increased comfort online can represent a real opportunity for those businesses who are already up and running with a great e-commerce site. You can begin thinking about ways to fine-tune your online shopping experience like communicating through more personalized messaging and offers. It’s a good time to put your media and communications plan in place and move forward.

You can learn from the experience of others who have, or have not, gone online as a convenience for their customers. Reports are out saying Border’s made a mistake in not creating an e-commerce strategy and opting out of online sales. The book retailer recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Borders loss was Amazon.com and Apple’s win as they cashed in on people’s desire for electronic books.

What do you have planned for online activities this year for your business? Let us know!
