She prefers a Vespa. He wants to see the newest Hollywood release. She loves indie films. This is not a description for the latest TV show. It’s an exploration of the preferences between PC and Mac users. The data was collected from users by Hunch.

This is slightly off topic – but I think it’s interesting to see the battle between PC and Mac users play out in TV commercials and other places.

I thought these statistics used in an infographic were even more interesting. Check out some of the findings:

Mac users are 13% more likely than PC users to say they want to be viewed as unique and different to make my mark.

23% of PC users are more likely to say they seldom throw parties.

Mac users are 50% more likely than PC users to say they frequently throw parties.

Mac users are 80% more likely than PC users to be vegetarian.

PC users like to read TV Guide, Redbook, US Weekly and the New York Times. Mac users choose Dwell, ReadyMade magazine, Macworld and the New York Times.

See what you think of the fun-loving infographic here. And let us know if you are a PC or Mac person and why.

Once Linux entered the computing scene 20 years ago, nothing was the same again. Linux today is everywhere … it is the largest collaborative development project in the history of computing.

You’ll find Linux in your TV, on your desktop, at the movies, powering stock exchanges, in your car, in your phone and at your ATM.

Back in 1991, it was Linus Torvalds, who released the first Linux code and decided to share his operating system with the world. Linus is also the one who chose a penguin as the Linux mascot … he was inspired by the penguin that bit him in 1996 at an aquarium.

To commemorate its 20-year anniversary, the Linux Foundation created an infographic that highlights the events of the open-source movement since 1991. It shows how big an impact the open source operating system has made since its inception.

Linux Infographic, click to enlarge.

Linux today continues to be the biggest OS player in the cloud as well. So it looks like it’s here to stay.

Take a look at the history of Linux in this short video produced by The Linux Foundation:

We appreciate the trust our customers place in us when it comes to hosting. We realize your desire to know what goes on with the network. The role we take in keeping you informed about your Codero services and products is one we take very seriously. That’s why we continue our efforts to make information easily accessible to you and enhance the customer experience. Every piece of software we develop and integrate is designed with customer needs in mind … to help you succeed with your hosting solutions.

The latest enhancement is to our convenient Server Portal. We’ve updated the Codero online portal once again … this time to spruce up the dashboard. The dashboard will now display more information regarding Codero customer services. For example, customers with dedicated servers can now view:

- The most recent time the server was rebooted
- Your bandwidth usage
- The processor for your dedicated server
- An overview of the IP Addresses displayed under the Service description
- Invoices and Orders now merged together in one box
- A New Message function available at time of login. A box is displayed which allows you to click and view the message. Mandatory messages will still bring up a pop-up box.

To display these features while you are in Server Portal, simply click on the informational icon to the right of your dedicated server. Here you will also see the latest Twitter updates from @Codero and @CoderoNOC which can also help you keep abreast of news about any upcoming network maintenance or system incidents.

Please continue to let us know how these newest refinements help you with your hosting and feel free to comment with feedback on any other customer portal features you would like incorporated.

Linus Torvalds has said goodbye to the Linux 2.6 kernel series. He has renamed Linux 2.6.40 kernel. It is now Linux 3.0 kernel with a second dot and another zero (3.0.0). There had already been 39 major releases of the 2.6 kernel series.

The kernel name is not the only change. When this release is officially launched later in the summer, reports say this kernel release will include cleancache support, a Microsoft Kinect Linux driver, and various open-source graphics driver improvements.

Linus said names and renumbering were talked about at last year’s Kernel Summit, but he felt “what’s the point of being in charge if you can’t pick the bike shed color without holding a referendum on it? So I am just going all alpha-male, and just renumbering it. You’ll like it.”

What do you think, do you like it?

The Linux 2.6 kernel series is on its way to its 40th release in seven years. The creator of the Linux operating system, Linus Torvalds, said this week that since there has already been so many Linux 2.6 releases, he may end up tagging this next version as the Linux 2.8.0 kernel or Linux 3.0. Linus sent an email to the Linux kernel mailing list as a reminder to the driver and subsystem maintainers that there would be a shortened merge window but did say “the voices in my head tell me the numbers are getting too big.”

Version 1.0 of the Linux kernel was released on March 14, 1994 and only supported single-processor i386-based computer systems. Version 2.6.0 was released on December 18, 2003 and this series of kernels is still the active series of stable kernels.

As the Linux kernel evolves and no revolutionary changes are likely in the near future, it could make sense to move the version number up or change to some other versioning scheme.

There are some users who do not want to change from the current Linux 2.6.xx versioning. How do you feel about it? Let us know.

It’s official…Google just announced Kansas City, Kansas will get the first high-speed broadband network in the country. Just a few short miles away from Codero’s headquarters in Lenexa, Kansas, the city beat out more than 1,100 cities across the U.S. to become a test site for the fiber network.

Kansas City, Kansas and area community leaders worked hard to secure the network which will allow internet connections of 1 gigabit per second to up to 500,000 people. Google Fiber transmits light over a fiber-optic cable to send and receive information. To put it into perspective, Google Fiber can make internet access more than 100 times faster than the broadband connection now available in U.S. homes. And 2000 times faster than dial-up!

All parts of the Kansas City, Kansas community will receive the service with Google starting first in the neighborhoods where people desire the service. Installation will take place in 2012.

Why Kansas City, Kansas? The search engine giant’s blog says,

“In selecting a city, our goal was to find a location where we could build efficiently, make an impact on the community and develop relationships with local government and community organizations. We’ve found this in Kansas City. We’ll be working closely with local organizations including the Kauffman Foundation, KCNext and the University of Kansas Medical Center to help develop the gigabit applications of the future.”

We know the response from cities to build the ultra high-speed broadband network in their area was overwhelming and we couldn’t be more excited to have the experimental project taking place right here in Kansas. There’s no place like home.

Watch the Google announcement and see Kansas leaders in action:

There are a range of security solutions which can help protect the confidential data you store on our servers. Managed Firewall is the most popular Codero offering used for this. It acts as a protective barrier to stop attacks before they can damage a hosted server and your data. Managed Firewall is completely dedicated to your environment and automatically blocks unwanted incoming traffic to your server based on pre-configured rules. It guards against service interruptions giving you the highest level of security and ensuring business continuity is never impacted.

With Managed Firewall, you’re essentially buying peace of mind by taking a proactive approach against attacks. You can download a data sheet for more information.

As you may already be aware, yesterday morning Codero was hit by a massive Denial of Service (“DoS”) attack that began at approximately 8:00 a.m. CST and impacted a number of our customers. This was a deliberate coordinated attack from multiple origination points. The attack appeared to have been politically motivated and three other hosting companies were impacted in addition to Codero.

Codero immediately initiated countermeasures and contacted our upstream bandwidth providers who are usually able to mitigate the impact of DoS attacks. In this case, however, the scale of the attack was so large that traditional approaches were not effective. After several attempts our engineers isolated and blocked the source of the attack and took immediate steps to restore service to our impacted customers. Law enforcement was also notified.

Unfortunately, because the internet now plays an unprecedented and important role in political events worldwide, these kinds of attacks are becoming more numerous and frequent and the methods of their originators are becoming more and more sophisticated. Similar attacks hit the free-speech platform WordPress® as recently as last week.

Codero stands by our commitment to continuously improve our services and to communicate with our customers when unforeseen events like this occur, using Twitter®, blog, telephone, and email. We will continue to work with law enforcement as appropriate and work to prevent and resolve future attacks where countermeasures are met with new methods of attack. As our teams continue to gather more information we will continue to communicate about what we learn and new additional countermeasures we are implementing.
