One of the most notable events in the cloud world last week was that Rackspace tied the knot with Amazon Web Services (AWS) as a reseller of Amazon’s giant cloud services. Rackspace is by no means the first hosting provider to offer AWS services to its customers; it was preceded by other companies such as LogicWorks, DataPipe, and others. Personally, I love Amazon’s innovations in online retail, and even in the cloud world. The things Amazon has put together with its magic retail formula of… Read More

(This article was first published at Network World. Click here to view that post.) When more than 20 services on the Amazon Web Services platform failed on Sunday, many of the internet’s biggest sites and apps, including Netflix, Tinder, and IMDb, suffered outages over a 6-8 hour period. The culprit behind these outages was AWS's NoSQL database DynamoDB, which was overwhelmed by metadata queries leading to substantial downtime affecting multiple AWS services (including AWS Elastic Compute Cloud [EC2] and AWS WorkSpaces). Many small businesses choose to host with Codero for a stable, secure ecommerce platform. Uptime is critical, especially as the holiday season (and Black Friday!) creep ever closer. Codero wants to let you know that the FBI has issued two warnings (here is the second) about a sophisticated scam called Business Email Compromise (BEC), which targets businesses working with foreign suppliers and businesses that regularly perform wire transfer payments. The fraudsters compromise legitimate business e-mail accounts through social engineering or phishing, then conduct unauthorized transfers of funds. Most victims are reporting money lost through wire transfers, others report checks were used instead. Whichever payment method is most commonly associated with normal business practices… Read More

Codero CEO Emil Sayegh delivered the keynote address at the Telco Data Center Summit in Dallas, TX, last Wednesday. Sayegh’s keynote looked at hybrid hosting, the future of IT infrastructure, and set out to ask one simple question: Are you ready? IT as Service (ITaaS) has become more prominent recently due to the intense rate of change brought about by cloud computing, social media, and big data. These technologies must be rapidly integrated into modern enterprise, and that’s where ITaaS enters the picture and tries… Read More

One of the biggest stories of the past few weeks is the recent breach of affair-oriented dating site Ashley Madison. Hackers released the personal information of more than 37 million users, which has led to embarrassment, blackmail, and government investigations. Regardless of the moral position of a company like this, this kind of breach is an unprecedented disaster for any organization hosting sensitive information. Its entire business was built on the notion of secrecy; in the eyes of the public, it has failed miserably in… Read More
