Monday Miscellany: Gadget of the Year, RIP Encarta, and wiki’s for everyone

Time Magazine’s 2009 Gadget of the Year? Not Apple’s iPhone 3GS – that came in at #4 – but DROID, thanks to a creative alliance between Motorola and Verizon and use of Google’s Android platform. It’s sleek, features a big display and is fully customizable with apps downloaded from the Android Market. See all of Time’s Top 10 Gadgets of 2009.

Rest In Peace, Microsoft Encarta. This year saw the demise of the once very popular digital encyclopedia which first launched as a CD-ROM in 1993 but couldn’t keep up with the (free) real-time capabilities of Wikipedia and other web-based search tools. Cyber, Green, or Brown Monday? Why Not Cyber Month?

Tis the season for online shopping. According to CNNMoney.com, Cyber Monday (the Monday after the Thanksgiving holiday) was big this year for online retailers, with more than 4 million shoppers per minute visiting sites early that morning (November 30), all in search of bargains via their laptops and desktop computers.  By day’s end, Coremetrics estimated that Cyber Monday sales rose 14 percent this year compared to 2008. Experts also point to strong sales for the entire 11-day “Cyber Stretch” around Black Friday and Cyber Monday as a return to 2007-like fourth quarter sales and conversion rates among retailers.

So how did your online store perform on “Green Monday” (two days ago), typically the busiest online shopping day of the year – to guarantee delivery by Christmas? And what are your prospects for “Free Shipping Day” coming this Thursday, the deadline for most free shipping, or next Monday, “Brown Monday”, when retailers start dramatic markdowns in order to sell their remaining holiday merchandise? The Future of Web Design: It’s All in the Details

fowdThe 2009 Future of Web Design (FOWD) conference, held November 16 and 17 in New York, offered a great, once-a-year opportunity to learn about the biggest web design trends, with a unique look at what we will be able to do in the future when programming websites and web apps.

Among the new ideas and technologies up for debate at this year’s FOWD, I personally find it exciting that advancements underway in HTML5 and CSS3 will improve usability for consumers on the Internet. For example, when I log in to Facebook and upload pictures, they are stored in a cloud – same for when I access Google Docs to save or share files. Want to see a visual representation of cloud computing? We found a great video on CNN that explains the basics of cloud computing.
