Planning for Catastrophe

It’s hard to plan for every eventuality, whether at work or at home. When was the last time you backed up your phone or laptop data? Businesses aren’t much better about this kind of disaster recovery preparation, even though downtime or lost data can lead to lost revenue, or even to business failure.

Small and Medium Businesses Unprepared

A recent ComputerWeekly.com article highlighted research that only 42% of Small and Medium Business (SMB) IT decision makers are concerned about ransomware. This study, conducted by Webroot June of 2017, followed close on the heels of WannaCry and Petya global cyber attacks. And yet even after the news stories, these organizations ranked ransomware low on the priority list of concerns. Most scored malware and phishing attacks as a higher priority.

Contrast this lack of concern with the fact that more than 60% of companies have already been affected by ransomware, particularly in the financial and retail industries. While many survey respondents report that they will be beefing up their budgets to deal with these kinds of concerns, the methodology varies.

Choosing Options for Back Up and Disaster Recovery

In all cases, SMB IT teams need to have a plan in place for disaster preparedness and response. To be prepared, organizations need to set up back up systems and disaster recovery planning. While a back up system may not feel like a high-priority IT budget line item, it’s important to consider the financial ramifications of lost data and the system downtime required to restore data.
