I got this email last week, from a customer commenting on a prior blog post I wrote about the high cost of AWS, saying: Great post! Don’t believe the HYPE: Dedicated Hosting is 3x cheaper than AWS I am a disgruntled ex-AWS customer turned happy 5-server Codero customer. Keep it up! Dennis L., Singapore CoolAsia This prompted me to realize that an opposite and counter-intuitive trend is going on in the face of the hyped news of Amazon’s enterprise cloud growth. It’s something we see… Read More

Too many hosting vendors are talking about openness on cloud as if it’s the ONLY thing that matters. The question is - does “open” really matter that much in the long term? Mind you, my team and I, among others, are the ones that came up with… Read More

The IT Manager Dilemmas: I remember when I was an IT Manager in the late 90’s. Back then I was responsible for of the massive IT infrastructure for a pre-paid phone card processor. It was an environment full of “big iron”. I had a giant storage array bigger than my car, bunches of dedicated servers, multiple HP-UX servers running Oracle databases, a Stratus Continuous Availability Server that you could literally swap a processor on without shutting it down, and a giant SS7 telephony switch. All… Read More

Ladies and gentlemen - It's big, it's data, it's big data. It was the talk of the town at CloudCon Expo in San Francisco this week. CloudCon Expo was a great event. It was great to meet and talk to so many peers, partners, customers and people from across the industry. One of the highlights for me was participating in the CEO-only, keynote panel, the “POWER Panel: The Business of Cloud & Big Data” - with the likes of other industry thought leaders. From industry legend… Read More

AWS – The 10,000-pound gorilla We know that Amazon Web Services (AWS) -- Amazon’s Cloud -- has its sights set on the enterprise market and is looking to make a splash.  They have a lot of our competitors on the run.  Amazon is a big name, and cloud adoption is good, but I am here to tell you that AWS is not for everyone. Here is why: An overwhelming 90% majority of enterprise workloads are better suited for a dedicated server.  In fact, dedicated server… Read More
